Description
This is a lithograph made by Picasso on 01/09/1949 in the atelier of Fernand Mourlot in Paris. It is a simple composition that, as the title suggests, depicts a dove which is a symbol of peace. Mourlot called it 'one of the most beautiful lithographs ever achieved.'
Picasso was known to be a defender of peace, having produced anti-war pieces such as Guernica and attended World Peace Congresses in Wroclaw, Paris, Sheffield, and Rome. Dove was used to illustrate the poster of the 1949 Paris Peace Congress. His fourth daughter, who was named Paloma (the Spanish word for dove), was born the day before the event.
